Reiki & Your Energy Fields

By Nancy Merrifield, RN, URMP, CCP

Picture
The Reiki room glows with candle light. Soft relaxing music plays. The Reiki Master  prepares the room and him or herself for the Reiki session. The client may be in the room or thousands of miles away, resting comfortably in his or her home. If it is a distant Reiki session the Reiki Master Practitioner uses a combination of  visualization, proxy  and intention, asking the Reiki to flow directly to the intended client, for the highest good of all. Reiki is not confined by distance or time so without hesitation, it flows to the client.  Self-directed, it goes to where the client needs it most.

In an article written by Kathie Lipinski, RN, MSN, Master Reiki Teacher, she states, "One of the basic teachings of Reiki healing is that we are far more than our physical bodies. We also have an energy body... (Lipinski, K, distant Healing,2009 www.reiki.org/reikinews/distanthealing.htm). Kathie explains that Reiki addresses the mental, emotional, spiritual and etheric aspects of a person as well as the physical. That each energy layer is different and that we should focus on each of those layers as we give Reiki or send Distant Reiki, each layer continuously interacting with each other, yet energetically different.

The Etheric Field:
"The etheric body is a name given to a supposed vital body known as the first or lowest layer in the 'human energy field.'" It is the energy duplicate of our physical body, the first layer of our energy body, and it extends out from our physical body up to about two inches.

The Emotional field:
Extending out 1-3 inches from your physical body is your emotional field. This is where all of your emotions lie.  It is right about where your sleeve might hang. You have heard the phrase she wears her heart on her sleeve. The phrase came about in the Middle Ages from the practice of young men and women drawing names to see who their valentine would be. They wore the name drawn pinned to their sleeve. The story is a good reminder that although we feel our emotions on the inside they reside in an energy layer on the outside of our body.

The Mental Field:
The energies of all of your thoughts and mental processes make up the mental field and can be felt or noticed three to eight inches from the body. For many who are trying to find balance between work, family, self and home this area is not calm, clear and flowing. In fact for many it is an area of obstacles and a source of great pain. As Reiki is given, the smooth flow of thought floods mental field confusion clarifying thought processes.

The Spiritual Field:
All inspiring is this area of our being. The Spiritual Field relates to our higher self and to the spiritual dimensions of who we are. This area of ourselves is set in motion when we meditate or pray. The spiritual field extends six to twenty-four inches out from the physical body. It is a part of ourselves that is closest to home and brings us intense pleasure and rewards. Yet it is an area that often receives little nurturing given the day to day responsibilities of family, friends, work and home. Kathie Lipinski RN, MSN said it best when she described how she sends Reiki to one’s spiritual being. "Imagine that Reiki comes in and fills up and restores their spirit… their essence…their soul. Imagine it as a beautiful golden flow of energy that is a direct link to the higher realms. Imagine that guidance flows in and that they are directly connected to the source, whatever they believe that to be.  (Lipinski, distant healing ).”

Reiki feels like a warm radiant glow. Many have described a feeling of tingling, peace, tranquility, sparkles or rainbows of color and light, a feeling of an all-encompassing vibration, a feeling of being rocked, a golden glow, white light. Every Reiki session is different for each individual, some sessions very intense others less intense. What is consistant is that Reiki always works and for the highest good of all.

IIt is not necessary for you to be home or resting during a distant Reiki session, but lying down or sitting in a tranquil space is recommended. It allows one to take in the peace and calm that is Reiki, to feel the sensations of the treatment, and it is an opportunity to nourish your spiritual self.
