Reiki is an amazing, relaxing experience, but it is the inner knowing of a young girl on Valentine’s Day who defined Reiki best for me. The challenge of Reiki is explaining it, defining it, helping others who have not experienced Reiki to understand it. I watch people evolve with Reiki. Negative attitudes turn positive, anger see new perspectives, closed arms open for hugs—yet still, I struggle for the words. I watch depression resolve, pain decrease, stress and anxiety calm—yet this intangible,
subtle energy called Reiki mystifies me after all these years of practice. I usually say, very logically, that “Reiki works with the energy part of you—which is all of you, your body, mind, spirit and the energy that surrounds you, called your aura. When your life energy is flowing free, that is good health and when it is not, Reiki clears the pathway for healing to begin. But then a young woman, now alone on Valentine’s Day, reminded me of the true essence of Reiki and that each person may know it in a different way. She reached for the heart shaped box of chocolates she had brought for us to share, choosing a chocolate covered cherry.
“It was Brad’s favorite,” she said, looking as though her first Reiki session had disappointed her. She took a thoughtful bite, pausing, as her eyes welled with tears. “Reiki was different for me,” she said.“It was silky, radiant; I felt a glow fill my arms and my chest, my whole being. Then I saw my heart—I saw it—sugar coated, filled with light. It was so cool, so healing. And then I knew—I would always be taken care of.” It was then I understood why Reiki is so hard to define; it is different for everyone, every time. Reiki can only be known—once experienced.
